Hello from home

Hello to my wonderful, smart and curious grade ones!  I miss you!  I hope you are safe, healthy and enjoying this special time with your families.   There are lots of things we don't know right now about what school will look like for the next few months.   Until I know more I thought I could let your parents know about some of the things we were working on before these uncertain times hit.   If you choose you may want to show your parents these things:

Social Studies - Landmark Research

We were working on creating pages for a Calgary Landmark Book.  Most of us finished research and started either 1. writing our book pages on writereader or 2. building our landmark out of paper/cardboard.  Here is a list of the landmarks each boy chose.  If you want to research and create more pages that would be amazing!   Here is also a picture of the class login for writereader.  Look at Mrs. Palmer's book for an example.

Literacy - Response to "the Chocolate Touch"
I just finished the read aloud "The Chocolate Touch" last week.  We were going to write a few sentences about the what happened in the beginning, middle and end of the story.   If you read any books with your parents you can do that as well.  Maybe you could fill in a page like the photo below.  Reading practice is essential to grade 1 progress.  You can also sign in to Epic Books with the login wcc7271 or login to Tumblebooks Library.  Login :Calgarypl Password: sd19
Science - Explore.org
In science we have been following some live nestcams on the website explore.org.  We have been watching the Great-Horned Owl nest, the osprey nest and the Bella Hummingbird nest.  You can make some predictions about when the osprey will return, when eggs will hatch.  You might want to explore something else on explore.org as well.

Math - Card Games and 3D shapes
Grade ones are working on developing fluency with basic math facts.  A fun way to learn your facts is through card games.  Remember to take out the face cards(Jacks, Queens and Kings) from the deck before you play any of the games below.   We were going to use some 'nets' to build 3D shapes this week.   It might help with building some of your landmarks.  Here is a website with free printable nets.  https://www.math-salamanders.com/3d-geometric-shapes.html

Parents please remember that these are not mandatory at this time.  These are only letting you know what we were working on before the pandemic hit and giving you ideas for continuity for your child if you want it.  Please do what works for your family.  Smile, have fun and support each other during these challenging times.
 Take care,
Mrs. Palmer
